The Iowa Hawkeyes added their first commit for 2012 yesterday. Mitchell Keppy has had Iowa high on his list since at least February (). And it makes a lot of sense why Keppy would like Iowa. His father, Myron, was a defensive lineman who played for Hayden Fry back in the 80s. Plus, Keppy lives right outside the Quad Cities...he's just on the wrong side of the river.

Keppy visited a few other schools around the Midwest and recently visited Iowa. The Hawkeyes were the first to offer Keppy and when offered he quickly accepted becoming the first in 2012 recruiting class. Like his father, Keppy is a lineman and plays both sides for Riverdale High School. He is being brought on as an offensive lineman for Iowa.

Keppy in High School

There is really a lot about Keppy as a high school football player out there. He plays for Riverdale High School where his father is the defensive coordinator. The Rams were not very good last year and finished just 2-8.

Keppy is better known for his wrestling prowess. His dad is also the wrestling coach. This past season Keppy was the top rated heavyweight wrestler for much of the year before finishing as the state runner-up. He was also the runner-up as a sophomore.

Quick Thoughts
Keppy reminds me a lot of Austin Blythe. It's probably the wrestling thing. It makes me think Keppy will be a likely candidate for offensive guard or maybe center. Though Iowa does have pretty deep pool along the offensive line this year, there could be quite a few openings on the 2-deeps next year. There will likely be 3 starters gone after this year (depending if Riley Reiff decides to go pro), so an O-lineman was a good way to start of this class.
