My Season Ticket Story

on
0 comments
I never had season tickets when I was in college. I'll admit, football wasn't my top priority as a student and I probably only went to 3 or 4 games in my few years at Iowa (I did watch the games on TV though). After college, I attended grad school at UNI, got married, and had a kid...never with season tickets. I took my wife to her first Iowa game 2 years ago against Penn State. That was the only game I made it to in 2008. Then last year my wife and I went to the Arizona game and my brother scored some alumni tickets to the homecoming game against Michigan. So I went with him. My season ticket story starts there...at the homecoming game.

Kickoff times for Iowa vs Iowa State and Eastern Illinois

on

It was announced today that the Iowa - Iowa State game will kick off at 2:30 and be aired on ABC (Regional) & ESPN2. This announcement came with a list of 4 other Big Ten games that will air on the ABC/ESPN family during the first 3 weeks of the season. This is just the second time ever both teams are coming off of bowl victories (the 2005 season followed wins by Iowa in the Capitol One Bowl and Iowa State in the Independence Bowl) , so there could actually be some legitimate (though probably small) interest outside of the state of Iowa.

Vacation

I'm headed to Washington, D.C. on Thursday and will be gone for about a week. We're driving out to see a couple of friends and to go to the museums and monuments, etc... So, for the next 10 days or so, posting on this site will probably me minimum. I'm taking the laptop and my iPod Touch, so with as long as I have wi-fi I should be able to post a few times but it'll likely only be about breaking news (like if I get an email from the ticket office).

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Defensive back

on
0 comments

Current Players

Seniors: 3 - Greiner, Rowell, Greenwood
Juniors: 5 - Bernstine, Sash, Lowe, Donatell, Prater
Sophomores: 5 - Castillo, Sleeper, Hyde, Nielsen, Swanson
RS Freshmen: 1 - Edwards
Freshmen: 4 - Hitchens, Lowery, Shumpert, Miller

Iowa's junior class is pretty stocked. Potentially 3 starters in the secondary could come from the juniors(Sash, Prater, and Bernstine) and the 4th starter will be a senior (Greenwood). There is a little bit of depth at both safety and cornerback though, as injuries have given some of the younger guys a chance to get some experience. Hyde could start his next 3 years. Swanson and Nielsen filled in during spring practice at safety. Castillo also saw considerable playing time last year. So for recruiting, the real need is to maintain the depth in the secondary to prepare for 2012, when all the now juniors are gone.

Quick Iowa Season Ticket Update

on
5 comments
I still have not heard anything from the ticket office about the status of my order, but I have read about numerous people who have. So I'm sitting here constantly rechecking my email every few minutes. Anyway, things haven't gotten a whole lot clearer yet so I use the word "update" in the title pretty loosely. However, Hawkeye State over on BHGP is investigating (or rather, is efforting) the whole season ticket situation. So I am eagerly awaiting his post. For now, here's a summary of what I've read from around the internet.

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Defensive line

on
2 comments

Current Players

Seniors: 4 - Clayborn, Klug, Ballard, Forgy
Juniors: 4 - Daniel, Nardo, Binns, Daniels
Sophomores: 2 - Bigach, Gaglione
RS Freshmen: 4 - Hopkins, Snyder, Covert, Alvis
Freshmen: 6 - Trinca-Pasat, Ferguson, Davis, Heissel, Johnson, Hardy

The last two classes of defensive linemen have been large and talented (at least at the high school level). However, with Clayborn, Klug, and Ballard all leaving after this year, the defensive line will be a priority for the Hawkeyes to figure out next summer. The current junior class looks strong, but that leaves 2012 even more bare when those guys graduate. Hopefully there will be some opportunities for some of the young guys to get some game experience either on special teams or during a blowout.

About those season tickets...

on

The University of Iowa Athletic Ticket Office put out a doozie of a release out on hawkeyesports.com. It was titled Ticket Requests More Than Double Available Inventory. Great title, huh? Well, great besides the fact that it isn't true. The post says that there were 7,300 new season ticket requests for 2,300 people, but only 4,500 tickets available. I think they need to double check their math because more than double 4,500 is any number greater than 9,000--not 7,300. And, that's just the beginning...

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Linebacker

on

Current Players

Seniors: 4 - Tarpinian, Hunter, Johnson, Petersen
Juniors: 3 - Nielsen, Tillison, Davis
Sophomores: 2 - Pryor, Olson
RS Freshmen: 3 - DiBona, Kloos, Kreiter
Freshmen: 4- Gray, Morris, Kirksey, Poggi

Despite loosing 2 starters at linebacker, the Iowa Football team is still a veteran group and features a lot of upperclassmen. In 2011, the starting 3 spots could very well be all seniors with Nielsen, Tillison, and Davis, which leaves 2012 with very little experience. The coaches will need to start working in some of the underclassmen, and especially the incoming 2010 freshmen. Morris is one player who could quickly make an impact, but Iowa still will have a lot to replace.

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Offensive line

Current Players

Seniors: 3 - Vandervelde, Koeppel, Haganman
Juniors: 5 - Zusevics, Hundertmark, Detweiler, Orne, Gettis
Sophomores: 4 - Ferentz, Tobin, McMillan, Reiff
RS Freshmen: 4 - Clark, Boffeli, Van Sloten, MacMillan
Freshmen: 3 - Donnal, Scherff, Stoeker

Though the offensive line may be the biggest question mark going into the 2010 season, I think it's actually one position that Iowa is fairly set at for the next few year. Next year, it's likely only Vandervelde will need to be replaced and you could probably pick nearly any of the underclassman to fill that spot. The one possible blow to the line would be if Reiff leaves after his junior year. That would leave the 2012 line looking less veteran.

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Tight ends

on

Current Players

Seniors: 1 - Reisner
Juniors: 2 - Herman, Furlong
Sophomores: 3 - Derby, Griggs, Gimm
RS Freshmen: 1 - Getz
Freshmen: 1 - Fiedorowicz

Iowa has more tight ends on its roster than most college football teams these days. However, the vast majority of the players are largely unproven without much game experience. Iowa's offense often features 2 and 3 TE sets, so depth is required at the position. Everyone is hoping Fiedorowicz will live up to his hype and I expect one of the sophomore to emerge as an option next year. Herman is decent as well and there is a strong possibility of someone (like Vier) switching positions and ending up at TE. It would be nice to get an "elite" tight end though, either this year or next to fill the void that Meyers and Moeaki (and Reisner after this year) left.

Current Players

Seniors: 7 - Nordmann, Johnson-Koulianous, Kuchel, Sandeman, Chaney, Evans, Audlehelm
Juniors: 3 - McNutt, Steibrecher, Mungongo*
Sophomores: 2 - Davis, Staggs
RS Freshmen: 4 - Hurt, Pregont, Cotton, Kelly
Freshmen: 2 - Chelf, Martin-Manley

*Mungongo wasn't on the spring prospectus, but I'm not sure what happened to him. If he still is on the team, he probably wouldn't be seeing the field anyway.

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Running backs

on

Current Players

Seniors: 1 - O'Meara
Juniors: 0
Sophomores: 4 - Wegher, Robinson, Hampton, White
RS Freshmen: 1 - Rogers
Freshmen: 4 - Johnson, Jordan, Coker

The logjam at running back no longer seems to be a problem. Jeff Brinson and Josh Brown both left the program and 5 of the 6 running backs had some kind of injury during spring practice. Robinson had surgery, Wegher sustained a minor shoulder injury, Paki had a knee thing I think, Hampton was "recovering" from his ACL tear from last year, and Rogers got dinged up in the spring game. So, though Iowa fans don't need any reminder of the importance of a deep pool of running back, this spring just reiterated it.

2011 Iowa Recruiting: Quarterbacks

on

Current Players

Seniors: 1 - Stanzi
Juniors: 0
Sophomores: 2 - Vandenberg, Wienke
RS Freshmen: 1 - Suess
Freshmen: 4 - Derby, Vier, Haluska, McMillan

The Hawkeyes are set at quarterback through 2012 with Stanzi the starter this year and Vandenberg the likely starter in '11 and '12. With Weinke around there should be a good backup though 2012 too. If Derby pans out at quarterback (which I think he will) and he redshirts this year, then Iowa could be set all the way through 2014. A good backup will be crucial though, especially if Derby is used to run the ball a lot increasing his chance of injury. I don't think any of the other QBs currently on Iowa's roster have a real chance at starting and I think Vier will change positions (TE probably) sooner than later.

Recruiting Week

I am probably setting myself up for failure here by announcing that I'm going to do a week on recruiting. I never do very well when I plan on doing a series of posts...I typically get busy, lazy, or just run out of time and don't finish the series. In this case though, I've already got a decent start writing, so hopefully it'll actually come together.

The 2010 Iowa Football Schedule is starting to come together as the second game time has been announced. The October 16th Iowa-Michigan game is set to kickoff in Ann Arbor at 2:30 and will air on ABC. The other game time that's already been announced is for Iowa's homecoming game two weeks prior against Penn State. Iowa vs. Penn State will be a night game and is set for a 7:05 kickoff on either ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2.

Spring Practice: Animoto Video

I decided to forgo the usual One Word Wednesday post this week and thought I'd try something new. I read about animoto a week or two ago and I finally got around to checking it out. It is a site that lets you make videos from a series of pictures or short video clips. You can add in things like text and music. It is very simple to use and it's free! Well, mostly free. You can only create 30 second videos and don't have access to every feature on the free account. If you pay, then obviously that opens other doors. Anyway. I put a video together using some of my pictures from Iowa's spring game.

2010 Big Ten Power Rankings: Post Spring

on
2 comments
Now that spring practice is over around the Big Ten, people are starting to come out with their conference power rankings. Here's a few to read through: ESPN Big Ten Blog (has Iowa #2), Hawkeye Nation (also has Iowa #2), and The Daily Gopher (has Iowa #3). The general consensus is that Ohio State is the team to beat this year and that Iowa and Wisconsin will also be in the mix. After that, though, there is a lot of disagreement. Here's how I see things shaking out though.

Hawkeyes around the NFL

Hawkeyes around the NFL
It has been a week since the NFL draft when 6 Iowa Hawkeyes (Bulaga, Angerer, Spievey, Moeaki, Edds, and Calloway) were selected. In addition, a couple of Hawkeyes earned tryouts and one was signed as free agents. Iowa is growing a pretty big footprint in the NFL and I think we have Coach Ferentz to thank. Anyway, I don't follow the NFL a lot, but since it's been a week since the draft I thought it'd be good to do a quick update.
