Well, just about everyone has shared their opinion on Big Ten expansion at this point (yes even me, though my thought was that the Big Ten should drop Northwestern) even though Jim Delaney has repeatedly said that expansion will take time and is still probably about a year away. Seriously, read any Big Ten related blog and I guarantee you'll find a post about it. BHGP points out how all the supposed "done deals" and crazy rumors are ridiculous. However, the latest chatter is very intriguing and has piqued my interest.

Spring practice is now over for all of the Big Ten football teams. We now have a long 4 month wait before fall camp starts up. As a football blogger, it's tough to not have news to report on everyday, but it gives me a chance to sit down and actually spend a day or two writing a post, like this one. Anyway, through just 15 practices it's hard to get all the answers about the teams in the Big Ten this year, especially with just 1 chance to actually see the teams play. But there are some things to be learned and a couple of interesting position battles to watch.

It was a record draft for the Iowa Hawkeyes who had 6 players selected, the 5th most of any school this year. (Florida had 9, Alabama 7, USC 7, and Oklahoma 7.) It was the most Hawkeyes drafted in the Ferentz's tenure and the most since 1976 which also saw 6 taken. On Saturday, the last 2 Hawkeyes were drafted as A.J. Edds and Kyle Calloway were selected in the 4th and 7th round respectively. They joined Bryan Bulaga, Pat Angerer, Amari Spievey, and Tony Moeaki as the 6 Hawkeyes drafted.

It was a big night for 3 former Iowa Hawkeyes as Pat Angerer, Amari Spievey, and Tony Moeaki were all drafted. Through 3 rounds, the Hawkeyes have had 4 players selected. Bryan Bulaga was drafted by Green Bay in round 1 yesterday night. There are likely 2 more players that will be drafted tomorrow, A.J. Edds and Kyle Calloway, and possibly 3 if a team gives Dace Richardson a chance.

Well it came a lot later than all the experts predicted, but Bryan Bulaga became a 1st round draft pick tonight as the 23rd overall selection. Bulaga was drafted by the Green Bay Packers as their 1st pick. Bulaga was the 4th offensive tackle selected and the 2nd Big Ten player (Brandon Graham was the first).
Shortly after the announcement came that the Iowa Hawkeyes had received its first verbal commitment, Marcus Grant, @HawkeyeFootball on twitter broke the news that there were in fact 2 players that had committed. Shortly thereafter, both Rivals and Scout confirmed that JaCorey Shepherd, another wide receiver, had indeed made his verbal commitment to the Iowa Football program.

The Iowa Football team received its first verbal commitment for the class of 2011 yesterday. Wide receiver (one of Iowa's biggest needs for next year) Marcus Grant from Massachusetts made up his mind after visiting Iowa City a few weeks ago. It's too early for stars by the rating services, but here is Grant's profile on Rivals and Scout. Iowa was the second to offer Grant (UConn was the first) back in March. Syracuse made an offer later as well.

McNutt had a strong day on Saturday. He didn't have a lot of catches during the scrimmage portion, but looked good overall. His hands are just incredible.

Sandeman looked pretty good all day. He was clearly number 1 as the punt returner and was often the 3rd receiver to come in behind McNutt and DJK. This is a nice catch from an early drill.

I employed my brother, Evan, to take pictures for me at the practice while I took notes and stats in my little notepad. He's got a nice camera and was able to zoom in a take some nice pictures (thanks bro!). I have over 100 pictures but was able to pare it down to 30 of the best ones and I split it into 3 separate posts in the interest of post length.
Jewel Hampton, who is recovering from an ACL tear, was in a red "no contact" jersey. He participated in the stretches, drills, and the 7-on-7, but not in the scrimmage.

I had a great time at the spring practice today. The weather was beautiful, the Hawkeyes looked pretty good, the atmosphere in Kinnick was nice. It was kind of a long day though and getting home after 9:00 PM is not conducive to writing long analytical posts. So for tonight, just some quick thoughts on the good and the bad. Then tomorrow and maybe spilling into the work week I have some stats and a ton of pictures.

The depth chart for the open spring practice was released the other day at the Parker/O'Keefe presser, but it is clearly not what the starters will look like come September. A few weeks I posted the Pick your starters: Offense and said I'd try to do the same for the defense. Well, I actually made good on that and here is your chance to pick who you think will be the starters on defense.

I haven't seen official word on this yet (though there was a supposed email sent out to certain Alumns) but Marc Morehouse has it on his blog, so that's good enough for me. When Iowa and Penn State play on October 2 in Kinnick Stadium it will be under the lights. The game is slated for roughly a 7:05 kickoff and will be on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC.

Yesterday the media got its shot at Iowa Football's offensive and defensive coordinators. It was typical presser stuff with some fluffy questions and not-too-specific answers. But, Norm Parker is always awesome to hear from and KOK is actually kind of insightful. Morehouse has a ton of videos up from the presser: Norm videos, KOK videos. And, Rob Howe (of HawkeyeInsider.com) posted a new depth chart that I assume is what the team will look like for the spring "game" (which actually could have up to 2 full quarters of action, though no tackling).

The Big Ten has released the prospectus for the 2010 Big Ten football season. There is a ton of great information on every Big Ten team. I always enjoy the returning starters stat. Of course there is a good breakdown of the Iowa Football (pdf) team. The composite schedule (pdf) is also cool. (The Big Ten has 13 games scheduled against MAC teams!) Here are some of the highlights:

Yesterday I was away from the computer for an hour or so and came back to find out that I had missed half a dozen or so Iowa Hawkeye news items. There are players leaving on both the men and women basketball teams and recruits asking to be released. Luckily though, amidst the gloomy basketball news, Iowa Football officially announce the location of its 2012 season opener.

Yesterday, while looking up some statistics on HawkeyeSports.com I noticed that the Spring Prospectus (pdf) had been posted. I haven't read through the whole thing yet, but made a good dent in it. I spent a good amount of time looking at the updated roster and made changes to the Iowa Football Roster on this site accordingly. I also took at look at the future schedules and skimmed through the season outlook. Some of the things that stood out at me:

For the most part predicting statistics is a jellybeans in a jar type of deal. But I took a look at the Iowa Football statistics from last year and coupled that with some of my on thoughts who will be the starters and how the playing time will shake out. So, things like the running back rotation and the depth chart for the linebackers, depending on how they turn out, will likely determine the success of my predictions. Also, these are certainly not all inclusive. I'm sure there will be an end-around or reverse resulting in a receiver getting some rushing yards, or maybe another McNutt pass, and I know more players will record tackles than those listed. I don't think any other explanation is really needed. Please chime in with your thoughts in the comments.

A whole year has gone by since my first post on Fight For Iowa. (Actually it's been a year and one day...I took Easter off.) It is really kind of hard for me to believe. This all started out as kind of an experiment. I had never had a blog before or even put much content out on the internet via a website or forum or even Facebook. But I spent much of my time scouring the depths of the web for any mention of Iowa Football during the way too long off season. So, really, this blog was a place for me to consolidate what I had read and then provide an opinion on it.
