The seal on Iowa's spring practice has been pretty tight these past few days, as it always is, and the talk of the town is about basketball or something. Apparently hiring a new coach is some kind of big deal... Actually, I really like McCaffery, especially after his press conference today. I think he's going to be good for the program and for the first time in years I am actually interested in Iowa basketball again (and strangely want a mocha from McDonalds...) Maybe I'll blog about basketball next year some, though football will always be first. Anyway, the official site has been providing some great content via its "Camp Central" page and the coaches clinic gave way to a few more things to talk about.

With the recent release of the spring Iowa Football depth chart there is at least a starting point now to make predictions for the starting lineup. Of course it is way too early to have a realistic idea of who will start at every position, but it's still fun to guess. So, I built a tool to help everyone put together their own offensive starting 11 (defense may come later). I picked 24 of the players I thought would most likely be picked (so if there is someone not there that you want let me know and I can add them) and you simply click on the names and drag-and-drop them in the appropriate spot. You can't do anything fancy like save or anything because that functionality would have taken me way too long to create. You can, though, get your starters in a sharable format by clicking the "Done" button. Then you can just copy and paste that and post it in the comments of this post, or on a message board, or in an email, etc... (Actual app is after the break.)

The Iowa Hawkeyes held their first of fifteen spring practices this afternoon shortly after Coach Ferentz addressed the media. Here is the full transcript of the Ferentz presser (pdf). As you can imagine, Ferentz didn't talk about anything too earth shattering, but did provide some updates of injuries and incites into player development. Plus, it is just so exciting to finally have some real news to talk about.

Spring practice is finally here after what seemed like an eternity, which really has been less than 3 months (the summer layoff is longer). So for about 4 weeks we actually have some real news to follow and don't have to make up silly predictions about the upcoming season (guilty...). Anyway, the big news of the day will likely be Kirk Ferentz's pre-practice presser which takes place at 12:30. You can follow it live on the official site and then of course check back here later tonight for even more coverage.

Over the next month or so, announcements will start coming out with the prime time schedule. The Big Ten Network and ESPN like to plan a lot of these games well in advance. Looking at the 2010 Iowa Football Schedule, we can probably assume some kickoff times as well (like those 11:00 starts against the "cupcakes"). So, before spring practice starts on Wednesday and before any kickoff times are announced, here are my predictions for the game time and TV coverage for every game this year.

Kirk Ferentz said recently that the Iowa Hawkeyes don't "reload" and explaining that Iowa is just "not one of those schools." That may be true. Iowa doesn't have the ability to recruit a slew of 5-star players every year. What the Hawkeyes do, though, is develop players who seemingly come out of nowhere to have great success. Whether it's a walk-on earning a scholarship and excelling in his senior year, or a 3-star redshirt freshman earning a starting spot over 5-star seniors...Iowa has breakout performances every season. Now, with spring practice right around the corner, there's no better time to start making prediction for the 2010 season. So here's my prediction for the breakout performers this year.

Spring is here (almost) after a long, long winter. In Des Moines, the high is 61 today! Around the Big Ten, Michigan and Wisconsin already started spring practice. The rest of the teams start within a week or so. Which means there is finally some football content worth writing about. Spring practice should at least bring some news of how players are progressing, new weights, possible position changes, injuries, etc... Plus, with the Kinnick FieldTurf installation completed, there will actually be a spring "game" this year, so we'll get a chance to look at the team.

I usually stick to football, because frankly basketball hasn't been at all worth my time since I started this blog. But today I feel compelled to post, because 1) a head coach has been fired, 2) I love filling out my bracket, and 3) the Iowa women have being playing really well and actually made the tournament.

I thought it would make sense to do a little research on the team that the Hawkeyes will be honoring with throwback jerseys against Ball State this year (by research I mean Google it, and it still took me all week to write this post). I didn't know a whole lot about the 1958 team because, well, it was before my time. What I did know: Rose Bowl Champs, National Champions (by the FWAA), 8-1-1... After doing a little research though, it's pretty clear that this was one of the best, if not the best, team in Iowa history and an obvious choice to honor.

Well, at least that's over... Today Clayborn entered a guilty plea to disorderly conduct. This is the result of an incident from March of last year where Clayborn mistakenly took a taxi driver for an opposing quarterback and punched him in the face. Reportedly the driver just honked at him, but there were some rumblings around the internet that there was some words of the racially charged nature said as well.

The University of Iowa Athletic Department announced the ticket prices for the upcoming 2010 Hawkeye Football season today. If you weren't ready enough for football to start, just wait until you order your season tickets. Prices went up, unsurprisingly, but not much. Season tickets are up $3, and single games will be $55 for the less exciting match ups and $65 for the "premium" games.
