With 8 starters returning there is less uncertainty about who will be playing defense for the Hawkeyes than on the offensive side. The open spots also have players that have gotten considerable experience, but there will still be some intense battles over the next few months.

I'm hitting Iowa City tomorrow for the spring career fair in the IMU. It'd be pretty awesome if I was looking to hire somebody to work for the blog here (which, if you do want to work for Fight For Iowa, let me know...I can pay you exactly $0.00). Or talking to football recruits would be cool. But alas, I am recruiting for my day job. Actually, I really enjoy it and like talking to all those energetic and optimistic young'ns. Plus, the UofI (obviously) is my favorite spot on the recruiting trail.

Spring practice is just over a month away now and it'll be an important time for many players on the offense contending for a spot in the starting lineup. While the coaches will say all the spots are up for grabs there are probably 6 or 7 that are locked down (McNutt and DJK at receiver, Stanzi as the QB, Reiff and Vandervelde on the line, Reisner at tight end and Morse at fullback). That leaves a couple of positions that we'll want to keep our eyes on throughout the spring and summer.

Well, it is not shocking to post that sophomore-to-be running back Jeff Brinson has decided to transfer. He is the second casualty of the "too many" running back situation that the Hawkeyes have. Josh Brown already decided to transfer earlier this year. There is no announcement on where Brinson will transfer, but I heard somewhere closer to home (he's from Florida).

Of course I'd love to see the Hawkeyes go 13-0 and be national champions, or really just be competitive in every game, play well and mistake free, have minimal injuries, etcetera, etcetera... More specifically though, there are some things I'd like to see that should lead to a successful and enjoyable season. So, without further ado, my list of the 10 Things I'd Like to See in 2010.

I have been playing around a little bit with some different Google offerings, particularly with the AJAX APIs. Anyway, that is probably not very interesting, so on to one of my first experiments: the roster map. I inputted the location of every player on the preliminary 2010 roster, except for those not from the USA (Jonny Mullings and Nolan MacMillan), and put them on a simple map. (Note: You need to have Flash for the map to work correctly.)

The following is probably the dumbest thing I've ever posted on this blog. It's the product of boredom (at least the Olympics start tonight and I can watch some curling) and the fact that KISS 107 FM has the same 3 songs on repeat every time I'm in the car. Anyway, you've been warned...

You may have landed on this page looking for the Iowa Fooball Schedule or Roster. The full schedule and roster can be found on other pages on this site. Here are the links:

The 2009 season is in the books. The all-star games are over. Signing day has come and past. And now...well spring practice is still over a month away and the spring "game" is the next time we'll see the team. An actual football game is still over 200 days away. So, it's time to put 2009 behind us and start talking 2010.

This was tweeted by @CaliHawki and (UPDATE) I have now seen this on some message boards, but the news is that Michael Stoeker, an offensive tackle from Johnston, has committed to walk-on next year for the Hawkeyes. Stoeker was on the All-CIML Conference Team as a senior and helped his team to a 6-5 record. He certainly has a size for an OT at 6'5" 300-lbs (you can see pictures of him here). With such a large group of offensive linemen graduating, it's always good to pick up more, so it's good hear that another in-state guy is headed to Iowa.
Sorry that it seems like I am posting more about site changes than about Hawkeye Football. Hopefully that will be changing soon. Anyway, I'm in the process of changing the commenting system from the generic one built into Blogger over to a nicer one by Disqus. I am still working on the formatting a bit and am having a really hard time restoring any previous comments that had been made. Once I get that done though, I think commenting on this site should be much better.

Kirk Ferentz is not known for having a penchant to play true freshman, but he has when necessary, or when a player earned it. Last year 3 true freshman saw the field: Brandon Wegher, Keenan Davis, and Micah Hyde. Wegher, obviously had a big impact rushing for 641 yards and a true freshman record 8 touchdowns. Looking forward to 2010 I see a similar year with only a small handful of true freshmen getting any playing time.

Amidst the signing day excitement Iowa picked up another walk-on commitment from in-state quarterback Blake Haluska. Yes, he's the brother of former Iowa Basketball player Adam Haluska. And yes, he's the star of Huck Finn, a Caroll High School American Literature Class Production, playing the role of "Pap."

Just a really quick note here. I've built a page for the blog on Facebook. It's really nothing fancy, but provides another way for me to connect with readers and other Hawkeye fans. So anyway, if you are a big Facebooker (I'm not really) become a fan today! There's a link under "Socialize" found at the top of the sidebar, or follow the link bellow.

Signing day was rather humdrum for the Hawkeyes as all 21 of the players who had verbally committed signed their letters of intent early this morning. There were no surprise additions or retractions, no suspenseful waiting (though some were slightly worried that OL Andrew Donnal may have gotten a late Ohio State offer), no melodramatic press conference with an array of baseball caps... That's not to say though, that this recruiting class isn't exciting. It is full of talented young men and includes a couple of players who could have an immediate impact. There are 13 players coming in to play defense, though the offense has the more highly touted recruits in A.J. Derby, C.J. Fiedorowicz, Marcus Coker, and Donnal.

Happy National Signing Day! Later today the Hawkeyes are expected to have 21 young men sign letters of intent to play for Iowa. The latest commitment came yesterday from safety Tanner Miller of Mid-Prairie in Wellman, Iowa. Miller was previously committed to UNI, but visited Iowa over the weekend and came away with a scholarship offer.
