2011 Iowa Recruiting: Defensive back

on

Current Players

Seniors: 3 - Greiner, Rowell, Greenwood
Juniors: 5 - Bernstine, Sash, Lowe, Donatell, Prater
Sophomores: 5 - Castillo, Sleeper, Hyde, Nielsen, Swanson
RS Freshmen: 1 - Edwards
Freshmen: 4 - Hitchens, Lowery, Shumpert, Miller

Iowa's junior class is pretty stocked. Potentially 3 starters in the secondary could come from the juniors(Sash, Prater, and Bernstine) and the 4th starter will be a senior (Greenwood). There is a little bit of depth at both safety and cornerback though, as injuries have given some of the younger guys a chance to get some experience. Hyde could start his next 3 years. Swanson and Nielsen filled in during spring practice at safety. Castillo also saw considerable playing time last year. So for recruiting, the real need is to maintain the depth in the secondary to prepare for 2012, when all the now juniors are gone.

2011 Needs: 4

Prospects Offered

Nick Temple - Indianapolis, IN | Scout: 3*
Links: Scout, Rivals
Temple is being lightly recruited around the Midwest. Iowa is the best school to offer Temple thus far and was the first school to offer. Temple also attended Iowa's camp. Based on that, I would guess that Iowa is in the lead.

Nicholas Law - Forestville, MD | Scout: 3*
Links: Scout, Rivals
Law is an East Coast kid and is favoring schools in the area. Though Iowa has had some luck recruiting out of the DC area, Law is more likely to land in the Big East. Rutgers is in the lead right now.

Rodney Mills - Tampa, FL | Scout: 2*
Links: Scout
Iowa was the first and only school to offer Mills thus far. He has some schools closer to home on his list too (Florida, Georgia, Alabama...) so if one offers I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the South.

Dondi Kirby - Monroeville, PA | Scout: 4*
Links: Scout, Rivals
Kirby is leaning toward the Big Ten and Iowa is in the mix. Though, his top three are Michigan, Ohio State, and Maryland.

Jabari Gorman - Miami, FL | Scout: 4*
Link: Scout, Rivals
Gorman is a former teammate of incoming freshman DeAndre Johnson. Gorman, however, will probably not end up a Hawkeye as he has Miami and Ohio State as his 2 favorite.

Dallas Crawford - Fort Myers, FL | Scout: 3*
Links: Scout, Rivals
Early on in the process Crawford thought he'd stay instate and go to Miami. However, he opened up his recruitment to outside of the South and now has Iowa and Michigan near the top of his list as well.

Chris Jones - Adamsville, AL | Scout: 3*
Links: Scout, Rivals
From the South, Jones is currently favoring 2 SEC schools, Auburn and Florida. It would be very surprising if he ends up a Hawkeye.

Tevin Mitchel - Mansfield, TX | NR
Links: Scout, Rivals
Mitchel is interested in becoming a Longhorn, but Texas is yet to offer. He has a lot of other offers, but may go to another Texas school is UT doesn't pull the trigger.

Graham Stewart - Middleton, CT | NR
Links: Scout, Rivals
Stewart hasn't been heavily recruited yet, and may or may not have an offer from Iowa (he showed up in a search, but "offer" is not checked in his profile). If he stays an off the radar recruit, Iowa should have a good chance.

Doran Grant - Akron, OH | Scout: 5*
Links: Scout, Rivals
Grant is one of the top defensive prospects this year. He is a long shot to go to Iowa as his top schools are Ohio State, Michigan, USC, and the likes.

Franklin Shannon - Dallas, TX | Scout: 4*
Links: Scout, Rivals
Shannon is another Texas kid who would like to go to UT, but is waiting for an offer. He is mainly exploring other teams in the Big XII for now.

Devonta Burns - Arlington, TX | Scout: 4*
Committed to Texas A&M

Josh Stewart - Denton, TX | Scout: 4*
Committed to Texas A&M

Jeremiah Hendy - Bowie, MD | Scout: 2*
Committed to Maryland
