The USA Bid Committee put out the list of the final 37 possible host cities for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup today. Iowa City and Kinnick Stadium had previous been on the list but are longer in the running. It would have been awesome to have the World Cup come to Iowa City, but only 12-18 stadiums make the final cut, so it was unlikely Kinnick would have been chosen. In 1994, when the United State last hosted the World Cup, the final stadiums chosen were the Rose Bowl, the Pontiac Silverdome, Stanford Stadium, Giants Stadium, the Citrus Bowl, Soldier Field, the Cotton Bowl, Foxboro Stadium, and RFK Stadium. While Kinnick is larger than most of these stadiums, Iowa City probably isn't large enough to handle the droves of fans that would come. It would also be pretty strange to see soccer being played on Kinnick's new FieldTurf, but probably really good advertising for the university.
